Cheng Xiangzhan, born on July 15, 1966, hails from Xinyexian, Henan Province. He graduated from the Chinese Department of Zhengzhou University in 1989 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1992, he graduated from the Chinese Department of Shandong University and obtained a master's degree in Chinese Literary Criticism. In 1995, he graduated from the Department of Chinese Language and Literature atShandong University with a Ph.D. in the major of Ancient/Traditional Chinese Literature, and in the same year, he remained at Shandong University, joining the teaching staff of the Office of Teaching and Research in Literary Theory. He was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor at Shandong Universityin 1997. In 1999, he started to serve as a Thesis Advisor for MA students in the major of Literature and Art. In 2000, he was appointed as a Professor, and Assistant to the Director of the Research Center for Literary and Artistic Aesthetics of Shandong University, a Key Research Base in the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education. He was promoted to the rank of Professor at Shandong University in 2004. From August 2006 through August 2007 Professor Cheng was a full-year visiting research scholar at the Harvard-Yenching Institute of Harvard University in the United States. In 2009, after a process of appraisal, Professor Cheng qualified as a Dissertation Advisor for Ph.D students in the area of Literature and Art at Shandong University, enrolling doctoral students under his tutelage and mentorship in the area of “Chinese Aesthetics” (since 2014 this student enrollment orientation has been adjusted to the area of “Ecological Aesthetics and Environmental Aesthetics”). Since 2010, he has served as Associate Director of the Research Center for Literary and Artistic Aesthetics of Shandong University, a Key Research Base in the Humanities and Social Sciences of the Ministry of Education (with primary responsibility for international scholarly exchange.) Since 2011, Professor Cheng has served as AssociateDirector of the Center for Ecological Aesthetics and Ecological Literature Research of Shandong University. In 2012, together with Professors Zeng Fanren and Lu Xuyuan,Professor Cheng co-founded the Ecological Aesthetics and Ecological Criticism Newsletter, and served as its Executive Editor. Since 2012, he has served as a member of the International Advisory Committee for the international English-language journalContemporary Aesthetics. Since 2014, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Chinese Academy of Literary Theory. In 2015, he co-founded the Center for Ecological Civilization and Ecological Aesthetics Research of Shandong University with Professor Zeng Fanren and served as itsAssociate Director. In 2017, Professor Cheng, through a process of assessment and selection, became a “Changjiang Scholar” Chair Professor under the aegis of the Ministry of Education. In April 2018, he assumed the duties of Associate Dean of the School of Literature, Shandong University.
Professor Cheng’s current and on-going primary research areas include: Chinese Aesthetics, Ecological Aesthetics, Environmental Aesthetics, Aesthetics of the Human Body (or “Soma-aesthetics”) and Ecological Criticism. He has published 8 monographs and 3 works of translation (translations of foreign scholarly works into the Chinese language.) In addition, he has also published more than 110 scholarly papers and articles – in Chinese as well as in other languages (including ten in the English language) in China, the United States, Britain, Germany, Poland, Turkey, Slovakia and other countries.
